Powered Industrial Trucks

A Powered Industrial Truck, commonly referred to as a forklift or lift truck, is a type of vehicle that is used primarily for transporting materials. In addition to forklifts, other examples of powered industrial trucks include order pickers, tow motors/tow tractors, and powered pallet jacks.

Powered industrial trucks are essential tools for efficient material moving operations, particularly in warehousing operations, but improper use can lead to potentially significant injuries or property damage

The most common hazards to be aware of include collisions, overturns, and injuries or property damage due to improperly secured or unstable loads.

General Requirements:

  • All powered industrial truck operators must receive training to be able to operate at UMBC.

Refresher training is required on a three (3) year basis.

  • Follow safe operating procedures in accordance with training, UMBC procedures, and manufacturer’s operating guidelines.
  • Horseplay and stunt driving are not permitted.
  • Never exceed the load or weight capacity of a powered industrial truck.
  • Stop and promptly report any powered industrial truck that is not operating appropriately. Do not operate a truck that has been removed from service.
