Equipment Safety

Nearly all research and teaching laboratories utilize specialized equipment to perform complex functions. Each piece of equipment presents its own set of particular hazards that must be mitigated. Techniques for hazard mitigation include the development of laboratory specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training materials, and equipment logbooks. Laboratory managers/supervisors, Principal Investigators (PI), and instructors are ultimately responsible for developing laboratory SOPs specific to the different types of work being conducted and equipment utilized. Individuals can reference the resources below if guidance is needed during the development of laboratory specific SOPs. If additional guidance is required contact the Office of Environmental Safety and Health at 5-2918 or esh@umbc.edu.
